Life update - After 2 years of helping my dad as his assistant basketball coach at Meeker, we were told on Thursday that they will be "going in a different direction" with the program next year. When we were hired, we were told that the first 2-3 years would be very tough...
..., but that they had our backs and would be patient with us. Over that 2 year span, we were constantly told we were doing well and never once told that anything needed to change our be different. This was completely unexpected.
They told my dad on Thursday, but no one had the decency to contact me and let me know why they made that decision. I don't know if I'll ever coach basketball again, but I really enjoyed the kids I coached at Meeker. Obviously, the powers that be think they deserve better than us
Since I'm never shy on giving my opinion, here's mine. Those kids deserve better administration that will live up to their promises and have enough spine to communicate with people before pulling the rug out from under them, and in turn, all of those kids.
Let this be another cautionary tale for people that want to get into coaching. Small towns can be the best. They are often the worst. That job is open if any coaches want it. You'll coach some great kids, but don't trust a word that comes from the principal, AD or supt.
