For all the people going bat crap crazy about this, some facts. 1/ https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1248733962916241408
We have worked tirelessly to try to convince people to stay home. A lot of people have spent an inordinate amount of time the past two weeks on churches that have refused to stop in-person services-- time that could have been spent on other pressing matters. 2/
When you look at the number of churches who are still threatening to meet, you can see the education and persuasion efforts have worked. The numbers of churches is in the single digits. 3/
Let's talk about options. The state could arrest preachers, arrest preachers and church attendees, or treat this like the public health emergency it is, and quarantine the persons who continue to violate legally-binding orders forbidding public gatherings. 4/
Arrest options? Doesn't address the public health issue, and simply exposes a vulnerable population (the incarcerated) to the germs these people are spreading. 5/
And make no mistake this is a public health issue- we have confirmed spread and deaths from church attendance. 6/
While I get the surveillance concerns, arrest raises more liberty concerns, risks spread to incarcerated persons, and doesn't address the underlying public health issue, the basis for the stay at home order. 7/
No one's liberty is being infringed. Actions have consequences. If you want to meet in a group at a church you can, but the consequence is home quarantine for 14 days. This is about mildest action the state can take to address the issue the gathering poses. 8/
So for those who are so mad, what's your proposal? Do you want people arrested? I assume no, so how do you propose to deal with the public health issue of those who simply can't be reasoned with? 9/
I can see no other option. And while I know some of the outrage is performative, I'm open to suggestions if there are legitimate ones. 10/end
