The sentence 'Literary study can't be scientific' would seem to contain a paradox: If not scientific then why a form of *study*? Would you propose a way out? What would it be?
In case it's not obvious, by 'scientific' here I mean a way of going about answering a question; I don't mean 'a science,' nor that the study of literature *is* a science in the way the study of subatomic particles is. I'm thinking more like science per Quine and Ullian:
