Reading more about Enigma (what Bletchley was grappling with) it seems the German military refused to admit it was being broken due to a terror of making their superiors look stupid. The difference can be seen in how Flowers managed to get Colossus made against the military who..
refused to finance the project. Instead Flowers invested his savings which could have bought a semi detached in those days and the GPO at Dollis Hill provided materials and manpower. Even Welchman was strongly opposed saying it was a waste of valves. (2000 were required)....
Flowers and a team worked until they eyes were about to pop out. By early 1944 it was ready and worked well almost from the word 'go'. It is hard to imagine going behind the backs of the military this way would have been possible in Germany. The British way of getting things done
... by by-passing obstinate, and in this case, plain wrong people by a conspiracy or common sense was key to the creation of the first modern programmable computer. It also highlights the reason why the German military could not admit Enigma was broken. Where we were flexible...
... their authoritarian system of one 'leader' reporting to another 'leader' would see flexibility as and attack on the military itself- they would see it as insufferable insubordination to be crushed. And so they were crushed.
Those today so keen on destroying democracy, Supporters of The Politics of Blame should beware their love of authoritarianism is self-destructive and, if they get what they want, it will end in tears. The British way of getting round bad politics and management is vastly better.
I should make clear. The book, Enigma, does not make this suggestion. In one of its postscripts the author tries to explain the strange refusal but he seems to miss the obvious. Social and attitudes towards obedience and discipline could be the real explanation.
