This. One of things I discovered when as middle schoolers why they were jumping to YA, and one thing I was told was "it's too romantic", "it's too dark", "I want adventures and mystery". So they stayed in MG or Graphic Novels.

We need the range. As I told one client, "time to knock down the kitchen wall so we can expand the table."

Teen and YA. So younger teens can see themselves and they can grow into those YA books we all already love. And those YA books can still go further in their one YA shelf.
I have done many threads and even blog post on this so I am not diving in again. Sore and tired from yesterday.

But I support a 2 section Yound Adult space: Teen and YA. They live in the same space like how contemporary & fantasy are broken up, but metadata of age does 1 more
degree of separation. And I have photo evidence that it can be done. And by Barnes & Noble no less.
It is not impossible. The systems are already there.

We just have to adjust a few things.
