Hey. I’m thinking of trying something for a bit—recommending a book I love, and highlighting an indie bookstore, each week. (Obviously you could get the book anywhere but it’s nice to shout out indies who will ship to you!) Would that be interesting to people?
Okay, it seems like the overwhelming response is YES, so—let’s do this thing! Every day I’ll highlight a book I love (old or new) and an indie bookstore you should know. Order from them or your indie of choice! #DailyBookAndIndie
I will try to remember my own hashtag for easier find ability 🤦🏻‍♀️ #DailyBookAndIndie
But, if you prefer to order direct, MANY independent bookstores will ship directly to you--some are even offering local delivery in this time. Know that however you order, your booksellers do this every time you support them:
#DailyBookAndIndie 1: GOOD TALK, by Mira Jacob. I adore this book unreservedly. I repeatedly press it into people's hands and every single time they say to me a day or two later, "You were totally right. That was really amazing."
Bonus fact: Mira Jacob apparently *taught herself to draw* for this book.
#DailyBookAndIndie 1, the Indie: @MacsBacks in Cleveland, OH. I went here as a teen so it's been a favorite for 25+ years. I think I bought some Kerouac here. 😂

Right now they're shipping free ($50+) AND donating $1 from each sale to a NE Ohio nonprofit. https://www.macsbacks.com/
Remember, you can support indies by ordering direct from the store (usually) OR using @bookshop_org, which gives a commission to affiliated indies AND shares part of its earnings. #DailyBookAndIndie
I'll have another #DailyBookAndIndie tomorrow (really should have picked a shorter hashtag, but OH WELL). Hang in there, all.
I also realize that I probably shouted about GOOD TALK before; it was on my mind due to Jacob's beautiful piece in the NYT yesterday about leaving NYC to be w/ her mother during the coronavirus. So if you've read it already, stay tuned! https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/10/opinion/covid-road-trip.html #DailyBookAndIndie
#DailyBookAndIndie 2, the book: DEPT. OF SPECULATION, by Jenny Offill. Such a little gem, told in gleaming snippets, a moving meditation on what it is to be in a marriage, to be a parent, to be alive. You can finish reading in a day but will think about it for years.
#DailyBookAndIndie 2, the indie: I learned about Dept. of Speculation when a bookseller still @papercutsjp pressed it into my hands! (She was right.) That’s what local indies do—and one reason to support them. No algorithm can match that.
When you first walk into @papercutsjp, it’s like walking into a jewelry box. Their collection is beautifully curated; owner Kate Layte has phenomenal taste and everywhere you look, there’s treasure. Just check out their puzzle selection, for starters! https://bookshop.org/lists/stuck-at-home-try-a-puzzle
