Good morning Ottawa!

On this date in 1912 Titanic set sail for NY.

Aboard the ill fated ship was the French artist who sculpted this bust of Laurier that now sits in the Chateau Laurier Hotel lobby.

The bust was put aboard a different ship, but the artist was on Titanic....
Charles Hays had commissioned the artist Paul Chèvre to create a bust of Laurier for his Hotel. The bust was sent ahead to the hotel on another ship, but Chevre decided to travel with Hays aboard Titanic for the official opening of the hotel on April 26th.
Chevre boarded Titanic in Cherbourg, France as a first class passenger (ticket number PC 17594, Cabin A-9) and played cards with some other French passengers as they crossed the Atlantic.

Chèvre survived the sinking, Hays did not. The hotel opening was postponed.
According to guests and staff, the ghost of Hays haunts the Chateau Laurier hotel because he did not get to see his pride and joy reach completion, his unfulfilled spirit haunting the hotel to this day.

The bust that almost sank with Titanic lives on as a stone cold reminder.
