/A short story in 4 passport photos, 2000 – 2020.
/2000. My first passport. At age 18, I decide I want to live and work for 6 months in a kibbutz to experience communitarian life. Sadly, the peace process grinds to a halt and violence escalates, so I postpone the trip. Then life happens and I never go.
/2010. I renew my Italian passport in London. At the consulate, long queues of desperate travellers seek help to get back to Italy, after the eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull causes worldwide air travel disruptions. Lots of shouting and pushing.
/2015. My first British Passport. The interview is on 8/5, the day after the General Election. I'm just back from 20 hours as a photographer on the campaign trail, and 3 hours of sleep. “You look tired, sir”. Ed M on TV resigns as I walk out of UKPO, looking tired too.
FIN/2020. Italian passport renewal. Once again, there are long queues at the consulate with people seeking help to fly back home. Many are wearing masks. There’s an eerie silence and I’ve never seen such an orderly queue. The COVID-19 crisis is in full swing. I've aged loads.
