/ Josh rightly draws attention to the next phase of this: when we've beaten back this wave, but a vaccine has not yet arrived. To deal with that phase properly, we need to engage in massive testing and contact tracing (and keep infection rates low enough that this can work.)
/ There is precisely ZERO sign that the federal government is interested in doing ANY of this. And it needs to be federal: you cannot keep the virus in check the way you'd need to if the states all have different systems in place, some better than others.
/ But here are our options: "we’ll either do [this] or all stay in our houses for a year or engage in the truly fantastical approach of going about life as usual while hundreds of thousands of Americans are dying and our national health care system collapsing around us."
/ The Trump administration's failure to get serious about this NOW will predictably mean EITHER that we all stay inside until there's a vaccine, with all the continuing economic and other hardship that will entail, OR that we just let the vaccine wash through our population.
/ THOSE ARE OUR CHOICES. Only the federal government can make it possible for us to reopen the economy safely and leave our homes. And they are doing PRECISELY NONE of the things they have to do to make that possible.
