Spring weather means it’s time for another digital day trip from #Athens! Today’s thread is on the #archaeology of Cape Sounion, the southernmost point of Attica & a short bus ride away from the city. This a story of Persians, Pausanias, mobile temples & Byron!

If you missed part 1, take a look at this thread on the island of Aegina, another great way to spend a day out of the city next time you’re in Athens! But enough of all that island business, it’s time for all things Sounion! https://twitter.com/levinerx/status/1247899649567907843?s=21 https://twitter.com/levinerx/status/1247899649567907843
Sounion is a rocky promontory sticking out of the southernmost part of Attica. It was the site of a large Attic deme & its strategic position allowed for control of both sea routes from the Saronic gulf into the Aegean & control of the rich ore deposits nearby!
