Not BTS related, but I wanna make a thread about how important is purple to the lgbt community, what it means and the history behind it since a lot of fellow lgbt people doesn't know πŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈβ¬‡οΈπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ
The first time I heard about this was when I was in my second year of high school. One of my teachers called a girl to come to the blackboard and she was wearing a purple t-shirt. When the teacher saw her, he asked her if she knew that purple was the colour of the gays.
Obviously, the whole class was like...?????? So he proceeded to tell us the story since he was used to do these kind of things (he often brought up a subjetc that seemed completely unrelated to history and then he linked it to past events in some way to teach us)
Apparently, during the civil war in our country, those who were lgbt were persecuted, killed and called "purples", since they considered them half woman (pink) and half men (blue). When the civil war was over, during the times of liberation of the society, survivor lgbt people
Took this colour to empower themselves and take pride on being called a "purple". They started to wear purple clothes or accessories to identify themselves among the community and, in those times, if someone wore purple or tell you that their fav color is purple, it meant that
They were lgbt. This is why straight people avoided to wear purple things or never picked purple as one of their fav colors, to not be linked and stigmatized along with the lgbt community. Nowadays purple is a common colour among youth, but you can still find that
A lot of old straight men that lived in that era refuse to this day to wear anything purple or complain if you gift them something purple.

I left this in my knowledge thinking that purple was linked to lgbt only in my country and not worldwide, but that's not the case.
Yesterday I saw the mv of "Oh my god" from the gg Gidle that suddenly appeared in my youtube as recommended. I am not multifandom since I only stan BTS, but I was aware that Gidle was cancelled in their last comeback because they were not aware of the mistakes they did
Concerning cultural appropiation. Nevertheless, I played the mv out of curiosity of why would youtube recommend me that and I discovered it probably was because the song is lgbt. It's about a woman uncontrollably falling in love for another woman. Then, I noticed
That there was a lot of purple elements in the mv that made me think that those were put in purpose and not casually. Even the lyrics talked about purple in a sense where is was clearly linked to lgbt. So it wasn't until yesterday that I began to question if the purple thing
Was related to lgbt worldwide and not just in the history of my country. These are some of the purple references in the "Oh my god" mv:
I did research and I found that, indeed, purple is a very linked and important colour to lgbt people. At the beginning, the lgbt flag had 8 colours instead of 6, including pink and baby blue, but those were deleted and they kept the purple at the end of the flag. The evolution:
Also, a lot of lgbt reivindications had a purple symbol, such as the purple hand movement. In the USA, a newspaper talked bad about lgbt people and homosexuality, so lgbt people spoke against it leaving purple hand stains to complain.
The purple rhino was also used on the 70's and created in Boston to raise awarness of the presence of lgbt people. Rhinos are peaceful animals but they can become agressive if they feel threatened. This was the meaning behind the use of this symbol.
We should also talk about the pink and black triangles used by nazis to identify gay men and lesbians in concentration camps. Here is the link to the article:
https://www.history.com/.amp/news/pink-triangle-nazi-concentration-camps
These triangles were lately used by the lgbt community as a sign of empower and this is how the bisexual triangles were created. Pink for the female attraction, blue for the male attraction, mixed in a purple triangle for attraction to both genders.
This is why the bisexual pride it's pink, purple and blue. It's origin is in the bisexual triangles whose origin was the stigma on the concentration camps.
Let's not forget how queer artist have also used purple as a symbol, such as Prince. He even changed his artistic name to a purple sign that resembled a mix of "male sign" and "female sign" ♀️♂️
Freddie Mercury was also a huge fan of Prince and in the cover of his movie purple colour was used all over. Same with the oscar winner Moonlight, starring a black gay male which movie cover was shades of purple and blue.
In conclusion: purple is a widely and commonly used colour to refer to lgbt people wordwide πŸ’œ πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸŒˆ
