Language is crucial as it helps us mentally assemble a concept. We keep saying "the virus is spreading", that is not what is happening WE are spreading the virus. Reason that's important, is it would hold governments accountable for their lack of strategy.
There is now a clear correlation between the competence of a government strategy and rate of deaths/contagion of the virus. We can't let our governments gaslight us into thinking the virus spreads w/out our influence.
We could have identified the most vulnerable in our population ( the poor, those with underlying conditions, elderly, pregnant people, children)

We could have tested to identifying asymptomatic spreaders.
We could have created emergency architecture to quarantine those w/symptoms to stop mass spread, especially if they lived in cramped accommodations.

We could have given a basic income to workers that can't work from home to keep them safe and given them a choice.
We could have given specialised training to essential workers who still wanted to work on how to protect themselves on the job (this is standard practice).

We could have given every essential worker specialised PPE's.
We could have hired industrial engineers to create new workflow models for essential workers to adapt to working in a pandemic. This means how many hours they could work w/out reaching fatigue, how many breaks they need to take, and new work guidelines.
We could have tested people as they come into the country and force them to quarantine for 14 days.

We could have protected remote communities for city dwellers so the virus was contained in areas rather than spreading all over the country.
We could have hired behavioural scientists and expert communicators to provide a communication strategy about the threat, spread, and prevention of the virus.

We could have identified key community leaders to translate and modify messaging for their communities
We could have locked down early and aggressively.

We could have passed emergency guidelines for noise and air pollution to help bring down the risk of the virus.

We could have implemented new regulations/standards for grocery stores, gas stations, and all other public spaces.
We could be disinfecting the public realm

We could have daily clear updates of how virus is evolving and the adaptations that need to be made.

We could have formed a coalition of scientists from around the world to share their studies so we can reach solutions faster.
We could have created emergency architecture for those with "mild" symptoms so they wouldn't have to do this alone w/little to no medical help.
All of these things are measures being taken to some degree by governments who care about their people and their economy. Don't be gaslight into thinking this government has done a good job or that this is what we deserve/is normal. They've not even done the bare minimum.
