During every election I can recall we’ve been told this is the most important vote of our lifetimes. 1/
The hyperbole resonated because we knew they were important, but I fear the pundits and pols cried wolf too many times, and that the urgency of 2020 will be obfuscated through unconscious reminders that we’ve heard this before. 2/
This is it, though. This is the election that will determine if liberal democracy survives, if the idea of a global order dedicated to all that could be survives. 3/
If President Trump is reelected, American leadership on the world-stage will go supernova leaving behind a power-vacuum of blackhole-like proportions. 4/
There are two countries most ready, willing, and waiting to reform the stardust of our fallen leadership and bravery and righteousness into their perversion of what the world should look like. 5/
And they are completely lacking in the nobility necessary to empower and inspire the people of this world to be the best example of humanity. China and Russia are authoritarian states, given credence throughout the world through the industry and belligerence of their leaders. 6/
Thru bribery, extortion, kompromat, economic leverage, industrial theft, &more they have been given carte blanche around the world 2 act like gangsters who threaten western society’s stability in ways that would, if not for their standing armies, be branded as terrorism. 7/
They jail, torture &assassinate their dissidents & ethnic minorities, sometimes on the sovereign grounds of other nations. Further, they have demonstrated with tragic humanitarian costs their woeful inadequacies when it comes to saving the world from a global pandemic. 8/
Mr. Trump calls these people friends. He calls Kim-Jong Un & MBS friends, all the while taking every opportunity to berate the allies of the US. The world needs strong American leadership because no other nation has the credibility and knowhow to lead with honor. 9/
After the senate acquitted Mr. Trump earlier this year, reports flooded the papers and broadcasts with reports of a president unrepentant and unbound. Even before that development he was, based on myriad insider and journalistic accounts, unhinged. 10/
How do you imagine Mr. Trump will govern if he is reelected in ‘20? He’s already purged the exec branch of all but the most obsequious sycophants who bent the knee &pledged loyalty to him. Not the constitution, but to the man. 11/
There is serving at the pleasure of the president, & then there’s worshiping deal leader. 12/
He speaks of enemies lists and jailing political opposition. The GOP in congress have already shown themselves to be disinterested in their duty of oversight, no matter how reckless, illegal, and contemptible the actions of the country’s chief executive. 13/
Is it beyond our imagination to conceive that starting in January ‘21, a new form of tyranny with its source & sanction the abdication of the GOP‘s duty & the results of reelection that Mr. Trump will corrupt permanently the sacred bond America made w/itself and the world? 14/
What promises to each other will we forget? What allies will we betray? What separations of power will coalesce in the hands of a mad king? What checks and balances will be measured on a thumb-tipped scale held in the hand of this neo-despot? What subjugations will we endure? 15/
Yes, we’ve all heard it one too many times, but 2020 is truly the election that matters most. It isn’t the normal choice between Democrats and Republicans, but rather a choice of just what kind of country, and world, in which we want to live: 16/
An imperfectly free society constantly striving2 improve shortcomings &where we can still count on our institutions, allies, &each other; or, a dark pseudo-dystopia led by an unstable carnival barker w/nothing but despotic allies, racism, malice, & malignant narcissism? 17/17
