With #ESHG2020 moving to an online meeting, so many thoughts and ideas have come to mind that I just had to scribble some of them down here.

A thread… 👇
/ If possible, why not move significant parts of #ESHG2020, e.g. poster sessions, to a platform like Twitter that is easily accessible. Other fields do this regularly (see examples below). This would accomplish a couple of things...
/ Posters would be „saved“ for future reference. I was discussing this w/ @berntpopp and Martin Kircher recently. No more taking crappy photos of posters from imperfect angles saved in a private silo/smartphone.
/ Post-conference connections & collaborations between researchers will be enhanced through such an exchange via Twitter. New research opportunities will arise trough this. #openscience
/ It would also lower the hurdle for a wider public audience, especially parent organisations, to participate & contribute in discussions in a scientific conference.
/ This could give a boost in the field of rare diseases (where I work), w/ progress so dependent on getting as many patients/families on board… e.g. @CureGrin (et al.)
/ Three #SciComm inspirations below. Possibilities, possibilities... https://twitter.com/raynal_cnrs/status/1234808466780364800

/ Such changes simply mean that everybody has to step up and develop their #SciComm game… 💪😉 @jenheemstra
/ Many of the changes to how scientific conferences are run this year will be here to stay. The start will be rocky but we will learn. Real life conferences will still take place because in person meetings & discussions are so valuable. They will just be rarer. #climatechange
/ An example for outreach comparison: https://twitter.com/Angelo_Frei/status/1235404452401573889
/ I am very privileged to not be affected so far by a pandemic that is so disruptive to many people and networks. But those of us unaffected can use this hold your breath kind of moment & in this way chip in for others that have more important things to worry about right now.
/ An overarching aspect of this is that scientific conferences gone digital/remote such as #ESHG2020 have a chance to be more inclusive. #openscience Let’s go!

@eshgsociety, @jorisveltman. Thanks for all the hard work transitioning this thing to an online meeting. 👏🚀
