Many questioned it at the time but when our #Coronavirus response in the UK is eventually scrutinised the decision to allow a quarter-of-a-million people to attend the Cheltenham festival will surely be a WHAT WERE WE DOING? moment.
Hello... I’m not ignoring other events. I tweeted this because I was thinking about Cheltenham. Of course things like LFC v AM (which was similarly questioned at the time), Crufts and others will all come under equal scrutiny. This isn’t a jab at just Cheltenham or horse racing👍🏻
For those shouting, I am not ‘piling on’ Cheltenham. At the time of Liverpool v A Madrid I - like others - was on TV asking why it & others were going ahead and why 1000s of fans were coming in from Madrid. This isn’t a blame game. The public enquiry will look at all these events
And yes, there were hundreds of thousands packed on the tube at around the same time. I know that.
The pictures of Cheltenham crowds are a dramatic depiction of the wider “we’ll be ok” attitude which will be examined in a public enquiry. Have a good Easter weekend.
