I’ve started my journey through the history of ECW with the only 1992 material I could find — WWE network hidden gems of two Best Of tapes and a TV pilot. Only skimming. It’s what you’d think — typical mediocre / indie stuff of the era. Names from the magazines.
Everyone's favorite surfer boy The Sandman with the first lady of ECW Lori "Peaches" Fullington, just the way we remember them
Yes that's right when we think about ECW & the Sandman who we all know and love, it's all about catching waves, bodysuits, fluorescent colors, sunglasses, repeatedly backdropping Jerry Lawler, and late 70s Billy Joel
ECW Episode #3 1993/04/19 Terry cuts a promo on Eddie Gilbert, accidentally knocks a guardrail on a child (bottom left corner) and doesn't realize what he's done until just before commercial #botchamania @Maffewgregg
Between episodes 3 & 4 ECW changes their vanity name for Viking Hall (a bingo hall at the corner of Swanson & Ritner)
The legendary Eddie Gilbert takes a headbutt
later in ECW episode 5, after comedy figure Sal Bellomo uncharacteristically gives a Nazi salute, we get the CLASSIC Sandman entrance
On ECW #11 the Dark Patriot (Doug Gilbert) randomly shows up. The Dark Patriot as a character doesn't really make sense to me. When I first saw him in Global, it was as an answer to the Patriot. Take him out of that context & I don't get the gimmick anymore.
On Episode #12, Eastern Championship Wrestling takes it to the EXTREME, as JT Smith and the Dark Patriot take the first ever fall and first ever dive off of the ECW arena's "Eagles Nest" respectively. Pull out your 1993 calendars and mark taping date May 14 as EXTREME!
early ECW violence in context: pre-TV & once on TV, fireballs were used & barely discussed. The spot above is instantly forgotten.
Yet on ep3, Rockin Rebel broke a styrofoam board on Sandman's head & it replayed for weeks. Jay Sulli with the Billy Eichner style, epic call...
The Wrestling Observer prints a report of the JT Smith / Dark Patriot bumps, then issues a correction 2 weeks later. Honestly, the suddenness of the JT fall despite the way you'd expect a wrestler from that era to milk it, makes me think the original write-up could be correct
In a curious bit of history, the son of Jerry Lawler (Kevin Lawler aka Kevin Christian) moved to Philadelphia to work out of the ECW office & work as a ref. Here he is at the finish of the main event of the Super Summer Sizzler (first super show of TV era) joining up with Paul E
Okay so I’m about to start episode 16. Here is kind of a state of ECW address up to this point, if anyone is actually reading this and wants a feel for what is happening at this point where they’ve held 3 sets of tapings and one super show, but must keep airing stuff out of order
The opening for episodes 1-15 uses the music from the Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, which then transitions into a knockoff of Hungry like the Wolf. This will change for the first time in episode 16
Episode 16, 93/7/27, they change their opening song for the first time, now with video from the actual shows. STAY TUNED after the intro for a press conference from ECW owner Tod Gordon, where he pretends that Bill Apter, Dave Meltzer, & Wade Keller are in attendance.
Tod Gordon already taking shots at the WWF, WCW, the NWA (which they are a member of), the USWA, & Global. Then he pretends to talk to Apter again. Honestly, the way the authority works makes so much more sense than what wrestling would become--logical fines, suspensions, etc
The wrestlers of W*ING are coming to ECW. Insane visuals of Mr. Pogo & Matsunaga promise spectacle the likes of which nothing at the tapings could possibly live up to. Still, you have to respect the fraudulent subtitles at the end of the clip,
It's the 8/17 ECW TV, the first of 7 eps taped over two days from 8/7-8/8. Stan Hansen shows up & is over as fuck. + as you'll see in the ads, they ARE following up on the balcony bumps! And would you believe it you intergender obsessed twitter geeks--an intergender match in 93!
Here is the Observer write-up on these tapings. This is the first issue (8/16) with a dedicated ECW section A notable thing here is that according to Dave, ECW was not yet part of the NWA, as I suggested they were a few tweets back.
Meltzer's report seems pretty on the money as the Miguel Perez Jr & Mitsuhiro Matsunaga vs Headhunters tag match on ECW #21 is the first genuinely excellent match on TV. It's everything you want from ECW -- dives, brawling, blood, unprotected chairshots, & "fatties doing flips"
4 days after the above match airs, ECW gets into the NWA. Here is some coverage from the Observer and the Torch.
On the same show, hosses Stan Hansen and Don Muraco break the ring, then during the mayhem, why not, Eddie Gilbert throws another fireball. The other two men in the match are ECW champ Tito Santana & "Fabulous" Shane Douglas, who I will get into in the next post
Shane debuted a few weeks ago. He instantly turned heel, joining Gilbert & Paul E. The announcer was appalled but the crowd didn't care because they barely knew him. Anyway, Shane gets the belt in a phantom title change announced by Todd Gordan & inserted days before UltraClash
The big UltraClash 93 show happens. While it draws well it's pretty much a dud. It's notable for being the first appearance of Public Enemy & the first show Joey Styles called. The highlight is JT Smith coming off a scaffold & Dark Patriot seeming to wimp out on a dive
Before UltraClash Eddie Gilbert was let go & Heyman took over as booker (pic 1, the Torch). Some material with Gilbert that was meant to finish up the Kevin Lawler angle that was taped before UltraClash never made air (pic 2, WON), nor did an UltraClash appearance (pic 3 WON)
The next two TVs use leftover stuff from the last taping (acknowledging that it was from before UltraClash), clips from the big event, and new promos & segments to hype ECW presents NWA Blood Feast~!

Hunter Q. Robbins III introduces Sabu--hater of tables.
We've already got a lot more of the on-location style promos

Public Enemy "The first generation of children that are more afraid of living than dying"

Kevin Sullivan "As the people of Philadelphia know, I'm not right."

Woman - evil laugh after hyping the fall fashion showdown
WUT
Okay so I've got a lot more on Eddie Gilbert's ECW departure from 4 tweets back
1) WON reports split is due to the imminent WWN project & ECW's role. Torch reports similar.
2) WON follow-up
3) Gilbert writes a letter to WON
4) Torch update on Gilbert with quotes for his plans
NWA / ECW Blood Feast is this weekend--2 days of TV taping leading into November to Remember 93. There's a lot more with the WWN project here, as the thought is that after these shows ECW TV will be replaced by the ill-fated WWN. (Matty in the House is fucking UNBEARABLE, btw)
Blood Feast TV from 10.05 has clips from the fall fashion showdown (surely a disaster) hosted by the insufferable Matty in the House (who spits in the face of people who don't want to be Paul Heyman's 1993 idea of cool)
Sabu makes his debut (as does Tazmaniac) & it starts out really hot with Sabu scaring people off & going mental (warning: cameo in the middle from Matty in the House, which the WWE Network cuts probably for music reasons but I'd like to think that it's for humanitarian reasons)
