Let's talk tactics!

What has Arteta brought to Arsenal & what it may mean for how he sets up Arsenal in the future:

In Possession use 2-3-5 formation:
- Vertical play through wings
- Central areas used for ball progression & reduces 1 v 1 isolation in transition with flat 3 MF
Attack Construction:

- Left Side Bias
- LB (Saka) given freedom to act as a LW going in/out
- LW (Auba instructed to attack centrally more as a ST)
- ST Tasked to drop and be a pressing agent
- RW tasked to hold the width
- AM Combine with RW to offer overload
MF Construction:

- Flat 3 which includes the RB to act as an auxiliary MF to cover the RW space
- LCM (Xhaka) act as an LB to cover the bombing Saka
- "DM" is a central pivot mainly tasked with distribution and the first engagement during a breakdown in the final thrid
DEF Construction:

- One Ball playing CB is tasked to step into MF to create overloads and facilitate progression (Mainly Luiz)
- Asked to maintain high line
Flaws?

- Ceballos is clearly placed as the central pivot due to his better distribution but lacks athleticism to deal with 2 way transitions
- Pepe isolated without support of an overlapping FB leaving him far from goal
- Bellerin in MF not ideal but used to reduce counters
What's the future?

- MF to have 1 central pivot and 2 modern "8"s capable of covering their respective wide spaces
- More emphasis on primary ball progression/ ability to deal with counters in transition
- DM athletically able to engage high up the pitch & great distribution
Take Away's:

- Get Pepe closer to goal
- Martinelli as the 9: an excellent header of the ball, factually a bigger goal threat than Laca this szn, and the same if not greater work rate off the ball
- Give Bellerin a preszn to recover from ACL to hold the width and support Pepe
Needs:
- Box-to-Box able to cover the RW to allow Pepe the freedom to cut inside
- DM that is a repeat sprinter with elite distribution & positioning
- LCB capable on the ball & has the ability to deal with a ball over the top given the high line implementation
