A little story about @umichmedicine & @UMichSurgery :

Tonight I did my first transplant in a month secondary to the #COVID crisis. We are running fewer ORs & everything takes a bit longer due to added safety measures to prevent disease transmission (even in COVID- patients)
No one complained about the wait time or the changing OR policies (2/2 evolving data)

At the end of the case we took the patient to the CVC-ICU b/c SICU is full, working hard to take care of really sick COVID patients

(also when I say we I mean @sachinkheterpal etal)
This required a longer transport with lines, tubes, etc. Once again, no one complained.

When we got to the unit, it was ready for us. They did not bat an eye at the taking care of a patient different from their usual. They asked the right questions and were excited to serve.
I just got off the phone with @sarah_wardCT. She just wanted to tell me that all is well and that I should get some sleep--they will take care of my patient, they've got it.

And she is right, they do.
Sarah is a badass CT resident who should be in the OR doing sweet cases or home right now w/ her two beautiful baby daughters. Instead she has been redeployed as a night float resident in the CVC-ICU. She couldn't have been more pleasant or engaged in taking care of my patient.
I thought tonight was going to be the story of doing a transplant in these crazy times but it turns out it's so much more.

People are flexing to new places, working outside their comfort zones, taking care of patients in very scary situations. They have every right to complain.
But they don't.

They are stepping up to the plate with grace and compassion.

So it turns out tonight wasn't about a transplant. It was about the people of @UMich, @umichmedicine, @UMichSurgery, @UMichCTSurgery in the time of crisis.

Showing up. Without hesitation.
This story is not unique-it's happening every SINGLE day.

Dear @umichmedicine,

We are showing the nation what we are made of (and its a bunch of beyond amazing people).

I couldn't be prouder to work at this place. Thank you for leading the way.
