Admitting my complete lack of expertise in this area, it strikes me that much surrounding #covid19 has a game theoretical/ "prisoners dilemma" quality: 1/5
Food shortages: The fact some unnecessarily behave as though there is one creates actual shortages and consequent need for others to react as such, so as not to be caught out. 2/5
International protective equipment supply: Unless all countries are acting in good faith, domestic PPE production rationally must stay in-house, and protectionism becomes rational response. Risk of being ‘played’ too high. 3/5
Physical/Social distancing: If the public does its part and complies voluntarily, the government “leviathan” need not be heavy handed. If enough start deviating, the necessary clampdown on liberties hurts all. 4/5
Risk of breakdown of social cohesion: when some take advantage of situation, or worse, sufficient deprivation that survival for some necessitates robbery, looting, etc., it becomes increasingly rational to defend oneself and one’s family, with catastrophic consequences 5/5
