A biography of William Jennings Bryan. A thrice-failed populist presidential democratic nominee for president who left an indelible mark on American politics.

It's a shame there's no modern-day equivalent for me to compare him to while I read & reflect...
Bryan was the 1st leader of a major party to argue for permanently expanding the power of the federal government to serve the welfare of ordinary Americans, to counter the overweening power of banks and industrial corporations....

He laid the intellectual groundwork for FDR.
But he was also sadly a racist who supported Jim Crow laws. And he was perhaps best remembered as the defense attorney in Scopes Monkey trial.

So a man who moved the ball forward a lot for some while hurting others.
