this Morrison claim is a lie. The “work” has all been on separating commercial from residential tenancies. Both are - or were - state and territory jurisdiction. Morrison has now tied a uniform “mandatory code” for commercial leases to [federal] “jobkeeper” payments to business.
the federal parliament legislated $130 billion to be distributed to business, and the national cabinet agreed on a mandatory national commercial leases code for the benefit of business. Then everyone except Tasmania “gave up on” 8 million residential tenants. Well done Scott👍🏼
THE STATES AND TERRITORIES. Because like schools, leases are in their jurisdictions. But Morrison steamed ahead like a plague ship on commercial tenancies, screwed them all over with his singleminded ideological fervour on “the economy” and fuck residential tenants.
and only Tasmania has legislated the eviction moratorium for residential tenants. So Morrison announcing a moratorium on evictions on the telly has thrown the entire residential tenancy sector into complete chaos, at massive emotional and financial cost, to millions of people.
it was 29 March that Morrison announced an eviction moratorium. So the chaos, uncertainty, anxiety and massive cost he has caused to residential tenants and the real estate industry and residential landlords has been going on for two weeks already.
four days ago when asked about RESIDENTIAL tenancies, Morrison gave the same answer. “Talk to your landlord” is not policy. It is not leadership. It is not national cabinet “working on” residential leases. Morrison chairs the national cabinet. https://twitter.com/imusing/status/1247375514085408768?s=21
anyway good to see media catching up on the prime ministerial policy to abandon people who rent their home. It has been obvious since at least last Sunday week, when Cormann let slip on Insiders. https://twitter.com/imusing/status/1245924926986412033?s=21
this is not a dig at Luke btw who is consistently at the forefront of reporting on the people who are deliberately marginalised and neglected by this government.
