1) Some words on impact of priviatized care on Sweden's #COVID19 numbers. First, the vast majority of those who have died in Stockholm have been over the age of 70. Of those, 40% caught the virus at care homes for the elderly. That group make up 20% of ALL deaths in Sweden.
2) Stockholm, as it turns out, has (by far) the highest percentage of privately-run care homes for the elderly in Sweden. Stockholm municipality has been run by a conservative-led alliance for 14 years, with care for the elderly run by the right-wing Christian Democrats.
3) Stockholm's local government has been privatizing numerous elements of healthcare and elderly care in Stockholm. One of the consequences is a large number part-time employees working in home-care and retirement homes. How does this relate to #COVID19?
4) Stockholm having lots of "hourly workers" in elderly care saves money, but means less experienced staff. Also means they don't qualify for sick pay. So, you can do the math. Low pay + no sick pay = staff that can't afford to miss work even when sick. So they go to work sick.
5) And, despite asking for it, Stockholm staff taking care of the elderly have not been given the proper protection (face-masks, gloves, etc.). So, the group taking care of highest-risk people (elderly) in Sweden's #COVID19 center, are among the poorest paid and poorest equipped.
6) While much discussion internationally about Sweden's #COVID19 strategy, there's been little on how privatization of several elements of Stockholm's health and elderly care has had an possible impact on deaths. And, how many staff -- as in the US -- can't afford to miss work.
7) So, tale of Stockholm's privatized care for elderly is about profits, and it's also about how the poorest residents in the capital city -- many of whom have immigrant backgrounds -- take care of the weakest under precarious working conditions. That lack of security now shows.
