Last month, if for example you were to compare the income of a cashier at shoppers drug mart (myself) to a cashier at a movie theater, both working the same amount of hours a week for a normal student (ex: 2-3 shifts) at minimum wage, our pay checks would have been nearly (1/5)
identical (ex: 600-800$/month). Now, that same movie theater cashier is making 2000$/month by sitting in their home while my income has stayed the same and I must continue to go to work all while directly putting myself at risk to COVID-19 (2/5)
and making 3x less than what they are now making. My coworkers and I cannot quit if we feel overwhelmed as we will receive no financial support and cease to be able to afford rent. We are stuck. This should be recognized at the very least. (3/5)
I know it is impossible to accommodate everyone, and some people will receive more money than they would have earned while others less. However, I feel as though minimum wage workers who continue to be on the front lines of this pandemic, (4/5)
who continue to put themselves at risk to ensure everyone else can continue to have access to food and supplies should also have the option to receive some compensation if not some type of support at the very least. Thanks for listening and stay safe! (5/5)
