This will probably be my final musing on the #H50 finale (famous last words). It's been kicking off big time on here and differences of opinion are turning into personal attacks, which is very... LiveJournal 2001. So 1 week on, here's my feelings about the future of McRoll.
For the sake of argument, say Steve and Cath DO fly off into the romantic sunset... what about the part AFTER the happy ever after? When reality hits, and they STILL don't want the same things. When they're still not enough for each other.
They've been travelling away from each other in life for some time. This idea that relationships NEVER die, people NEVER grow and evolve and change their priorities and world view... it's not a reflection of real life.
Cath may have known Steve when he was young, but she hasn't known him at ALL for years by her own choice. I understand the temptation to want the simplicity of the fairytale ending but life isn't a fairytale, and Steve's definitely isn't.
Say they spend some time together (weird though that she never asked to accompany him, just hijacked him when he couldn't really say no)... what happens when her next assignment comes in? Is Steve meant to be happy with a part-time lover again, like the Steve of 10 years ago?
There is NOTHING wrong with a casual, part-time relationship; some people make it work really successfully. Steve and Cath did for a long time. But I think 2020 Steve needs something more. Something deeper and more substantial.
The fact that I don't think he will find happiness with Cath doesn't mean I HATE her; I just don't KNOW her any more. She hasn't been written in any substantial way for 5 years. Since then, the writers have spent hours building Steve's bonds with other people especially Danny.
I genuinely don't see any world in which the Steve shown in 10.22 ends up with Catherine happily. He's a changed man. They don't KNOW each other any more, and I think the hurt between them is too deep to overcome.
To me, Cath was exactly what he needed at a specific time in his life: she was a link between his military and civilian lives, he knew Joe and Freddie, she helped him transition. But they outgrew each other. It's sad but it happens 🤷🏻‍♀️
My personal headcanon is that 10.22 Steve eventually ends up in a romantic relationship with Danny. I don't think it would be close to a fairy tale, but it would be a real, supportive and loving relationship. I believe they'd raise Danny's children and have some of their own.
But even if they DIDN'T end up together romantically, and stayed platonic best friends forever, I still don't think Steve and Catherine would end up as anything more than friends with a long history. That's not a bad thing! Steve needs all the friends he can get!
It's fine for us all to feel differently about this - your ship my not be my ship, but neither of us is evil, and if I'm advocating a different ending than you personally subscribe to it's not AGAINST you.
