Same on timely labour market information.
Yet we know from census stats (and some epidemiological data in public health) that low-income is associated with shorter life expectancy and greater risk of illness; and that low-income is associated with clear racial patterns. /2 https://twitter.com/spaikin/status/1248666369194971136
"75 percent of front-line workers in the city — grocery clerks, bus and train operators, janitors and child care staff — are minorities. More than 60 percent of people who work as cleaners are Latino, and more than 40 percent of transit employees are black." /5
Different in Canada? No.
Yes, we have better healthcare but almost all the "essential" front line workers (grocery clerks, transit workers, cleaners, personal care/child care/nursing home workers, delivery people, even most new docs and nurses in hosp) are racial minorities. /6
And these essential "front line" workers, especially the ones not in ER or ICU but in constant contact with people because that's their job, are NOT BEING PROTECTED with the right gear, or basic enforcement of known workplace health and safety rules.
THIS HAS TO CHANGE, FAST /7
Most provinces are totally dropping the ball on minimizing contagion, not by testing, but by enforcing rules in essential workplaces, cracking down hard on reckless behaviour by employers (and, it has to be said, some workers too), and shutting down more non-essential workplaces
The true front lines - cleaners and all workers in hosps and nursing homes - need help:
Can you get a Covid19 Public Health Workplace Safety Protocol developed, broadcast, enforced right away, not later @CPHO_Canada/ @PattyHajdu Dr Henry/ @adriandix Dr.Williams/ @celliottability?
Contain Covid19 by reducing workplace-based transmission (support/streamline workers so they don't have to work multiple employers; guarantee protective gear/sanitary supplies; set and enforce clear workplace rules/fine lax workplace practices)
This is the leadership we need now.
