I have not written a "dissertation" on a Disney movie since my Tangled one about emotional familial abuse and with recent things, I thought why not do another.
Let's discuss Nani Pelekai, one of Disneys greatest characters and also her bond with Lilo Pelekai.
Let's discuss Nani Pelekai, one of Disneys greatest characters and also her bond with Lilo Pelekai.
To start off, lets dive into Nanis past. The past in Lilo and Stitch is not openly discussed much but you can garner information from the background. From all of the trophies/medals you can tell Nani was on her way to becoming a surfing champion, it clearly is a passion of hers.
I will make multiple points of Nani supporting Lilo in whatever she does, so to start it off. Lilo has a hobby of taking pictures of tourists and displays them on her wall. Nani thinks it's odd but doesn't stop her, she is also the one who develops the pictures for her.
They live on a small island, so imagine bringing in camera after cameras full of just nothing but these odd tourist photos to get developed. People probably talk/mock her but even if they did she wouldn't care cause it is one of the few things that make Lilo really happy.
Nani gets fired from her job due to Stitches antics and instead of casting blame on Lilo when asked "Did you lose your job because of Stitch and me?" She says instead "Nah. The manager's a vampire. He wanted me to join his legion of the undead."
This is one of my fav sequences in the movie
Lilo asking if she can pay for Stitch and Nani taking the money back, giving it to Lilo just so they can do everything again is amazing. Again, Nani just showing support for her sister in little ways and not judging her quirks.

"Aloha 'Oe" is one of the most beautiful scenes from any Disney movie. It doesn't need a backing track, no special effects, no magic, just Nani saying goodbye the only way she can, by singing to Lilo a song. (Also this song has incredible cultural significance/history behind it).
Their relationship isn't perfect but it is not meant to be, its realistic. They fight multiple times in the movie but even through all that they both still care for one another deeply, the fights/makeups/taunts make their sisterly bond more realistic.
Nani isn't always understanding though and puts her foot down when she feels like she has to in order to protect Lilo. She almost brings Stitch back but stops because Lilo truly wants to keep him and mentions Ohana, the start of the movies theme "Found family".
When they adopt Stitch of course everyone is rightfully freaked out by him, but this is the pet Lilo chose. Nani doesn't think its the right one but Lilo confirming this is the pet she wants is enough for her. Its not about Nanis preference, shes only thinking of what Lilo wants.
