1. We don’t have a vaccine for HIV yet. We may not have one for Covid-19 for a couple of years. Unlike HIV, Covid-19 can be spread without any physical contact. So either we all remain indoors until a vaccine emerges or carry certificates. Some issues to address before then: https://twitter.com/cnnbrk/status/1248601156219293697
2. We will need to develop rapid tests so people can test themselves frequently, daily even, after they venture out in public places (and would such places ban people without certificates?) or take public transportation. Will those who get infected later need to alert employers?
3. Many countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination to prove that a traveler has been vaccinated against yellow fever. A digital Covid-19 immunity certificate is coming but not without (lengthy?) political and legal battles.
4. But how do you protect the uninfected or those without Covid-19 immunity? Homes can be modified so infected family members or those without immunity can stay “separately” from those with immunity. Will governments decide to segregate populations by immunity designation?
5. In theory, governments can print “magic money”💵 for 2-3 years (maybe longer) to keep essential people working at essential factories producing essential food and medicines, while non-essential people work from home 😷 to slow the spread until a Covid-19 vaccine emerges.
6. But to allow such “essential” people (especially healthcare workers) to work in a safe environment, immunity certificates and frequent testing and lots of “draconian” measures and intrusive checks may be necessary. Like a Black Mirror episode. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1248727767639875585
7. Depending on where governments land on the issue of mandatory Covid-19 immunity/status certificates, we could see major overhauls to everything from infrastructure to travel: apartment buildings, planes, buses, trains could all be designated for immune/non-immune populations. https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1248728645121781763
8. And what if a Covid-19 vaccine never emerges? No more religious services and public schools for a while until/when/if “herd immunity” develops? How will this change the concept of marriage and birthing kids? https://twitter.com/johndesmarteau/status/1248730422839820296
9. Vaccines can’t be developed over Zoom alone. R&D for a Covid-19 vaccine will inevitably involve people working closely, meeting in person, frequently. Will require lots of planning and PPE to pull off such important work. What will be the toll on health (mental, physical)? https://twitter.com/khanoisseur/status/1248731210970533888
