We need more open public space in the urban core. This is true before/during/after the #COVID19 crisis. Potential public spaces are hiding in plain sight but zoning regs, insurance policies & a culture of not prioritizing public access prevent us from using them #fourthplanfriday
We should reimagine streets, parking spaces & vacant lots - both permanently & temporarily - as open space in urban areas, particularly places w/few playgrounds, by adopting & expanding programs like Schoolyards to Playgrounds & @NPPNYC #fourthplanfriday
We should reform insurance & building codes for more flexible roof use in the urban core. Roof access is vital during the #COVID19 crisis as @MosesNYC wrote recently, but roofs can also house playgrounds, parks, farming, telecoms & more #fourthflanfriday https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-open-the-rooftops-nyc-20200323-b5735zv66bc4dl52sxxl2trpmq-story.html
How else can we create open space in the crowded urban core? Tweak our mgmt of public buildings, privately-owned public spaces, office lobbies & unused underground passageways (yes, these exist). This is within our grasp & could transform our cityscapes #fourthplanfriday
More enjoyable public spaces in the urban core would make living, working, & visiting more pleasant while fostering more civic pride. Not to mention the long-term health & sustainability benefits.
