We recently got Disney+ to help us through quarantine. Let's be honest, nothing is quite as reassuringly comforting as Disney and right now we need that in spades. What follows is a thread about my take on the films we have watched, some new to me and some very familiar...
First up was The Princess and the frog which was an absolute delight of a film. It gave me a serious craving to visit New Orleans and to stuff myself with beignets . Tiana had sass and heart. Nice comic relief from Louis. The bit at the end with Ray almost broke me though 🌌
Next we went back to the beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Serious Goldilocks vibes from Snow White breaking into the dwarfs home and getting in their beds. Also, let's be honest the Prince rocking up and kissing a woman he thinks is dead is deeply problematic.
Onto Lilo and Stitch. I had never seen this before and realised I had somehow conflated it with Dora the Explorer in my head... Stitch was serving me blue, pug-sloth-dog-alien realness and Lilo was the sort of girl I wish I had been. Oodles of heart and humour. Loved it.
Next came Frankenweenie. I do love myself some Tim Burton. Victor has wild science skills and heart. Can't quite believe that a live action version of this came first! I feel the whole dog meets Frankenstein's monster vibe would feel a whole lot less cute when it's a real dog...
Last night was Pocahontas. Let's start with the most important thing- it has a pug in it! She's definitely one of the most strikingly beautiful women in Disney history. Colours of the wind remains an absolute banger. Turns out I totally imagined them getting married at the end...
Tonight was the turn of Cinderella. I enjoyed that a large chunk of the first part of the film is just the mice goofing about in their beautifully tailored clothes. I don't see what is remotely charming about the Prince who has the charisma of a stale digestive biscuit.
