Thread: We often don’t hear about the losses behind the scenes, so here’s one of mine. I was approached for an opportunity that paid $800k-1m (+ bonus) per year this year. I didn’t get it. 1/
/In my own business, I work behind the scenes with some incredibly successful people...but this got my attention. This company had heard of my work. A recruiter contacted me, I signed an NDA, and I had two interviews.
/The first went very well. I’m a perfect fit. I can do what they want better than anyone else, and I specialize in highly competitive, high stress, fast-paced environments. I work globally. But the second interview was...odd.
/He asked why I got so much press, and why I was so public. I told him I had never paid for press (true), and that I get clients primarily through word of mouth (also true). He talked about his own history of starting a company for a long time.
/I reached out after a couple of weeks, and they decided to pivot & hire someone with an “HR” background for the position instead. That stung. It wasn’t the money honestly, it was the opportunity - I was going to absolutely crush this, and I knew it.
/What excited me? The ability to work with high performing people, and actually follow & develop them *long term.* That’s something I never get - it would be a real chance to show what I could do: How much I could actually push performance at an incredibly high level. Legacy.
/So I might erase this thread, and @amandaorson can verify everything I’ve said...but just know that I used that yearly million + bonus opportunity as a massive motivator. It was a great honor to get an in-house opportunity, and it’s a shame they went a traditional route.
/When people ask, “what are you called to do?” For me, unlocking potential is my gift, and I’ll do it until I die. I’ve used a doc in psychology uniquely in this way to push people beyond what they believed they could do..and it’s exhilarating. Hope they hired someone good. /fin
