Is there any good research on the sociology of how people join and leave open source projects?

Seems like an area with lots of interesting dynamics and potentially a lot of good data (given the amount of the community interaction that happens in public)

Also hugs to anyone who wants them and is negatively affected by the events I'm blatantly subtweeting. I don't know exactly what's going on, but it all sounds very unpleasant.
