When I was in journalism school, no one talked about the toll this job can take on your physical and emotional health. Now, when I teach, I address trauma constantly. Traumatic stress. Secondary trauma. How to make a trauma plan. That you don’t have to cover war to absorb trauma.
Journalists are first responders, yes. And many of us *are* out there risking our bodies and health. But you can also be in your own home — socially distanced, reporting remotely — and still be traumatized by the world we are all in and the issues we are all covering 24/7.
To my fellow journalists: Be gentle with yourselves. Take breaks. Give yourselves permission to not be ok. Ask for help. Sleep, eat, hydrate.

To everyone else: Yes, #ThankAJourno, but also buy a newspaper. Ask how the person keeping you informed is doing. Know we are people, too
Sending extra love to all you fiercely talented, brave, beautiful journalists today. My DMs are always open if you need to talk or want some dog pics to brighten your day. 💜
