1/ I'm convinced the structural damage to the economy from this virus will have long-lasting effects that will not lead to a rapid recovery once it subsides. The legislation that Congress has passed has not been enough. We need to prepare for the worst, and we...
2/ should be prepared to pass bills that do the following:

-Beef up our unemployment benefits that support families in industries that have been disproportionately affected by this virus.

-Pass a massive infrastructure and education bill that leads to the building of...
3/ high-speed rail, mass transit, roads & bridges, refurbishing of our schools, and modernization of our curriculum that includes information technology learning and financial literacy, the building of new hospitals, and fully funding our public colleges to lower tuition and...
4/ make sure more Americans go to college.

-Explore the policy the U.K. has where the gov't subsidizes 80% of salaries for distressed company employees during a national emergency.

-Reinvest in the U.S. by eliminating business taxes for a year for those who bring...
5/ manufacturing back to the U.S. to ensure our supply lines are domestically produced and protected from global disruptions.

-Work with our traditional allies to support the growth of each other's economies by modernizing our trade agreements.

-Invest in public health...
6/ programs and build on the work of former First Lady @MichelleObama, where we focus on healthy food delivery in schools and neighborhoods where we've seen unhealthy living situations leading to higher mortality rates - not only with this virus - but with heart disease,
7/ diabetes, etc.

-Create a Public Health Insurance Option.

-Pass national legislation that reforms our bail laws and prosecutorial standards, so many are not put into jails for technical reasons like not being able to pay a fine.

-Eradicate homelessness by investing...
8/ in permanent housing, job placement services, and social and mental health services.

-And, finally (for this thread), invest in middle-class housing options. In urban areas across the country, there's no shortage of luxury housing, but there is for middle-class Americans...
9/ and we need to build more housing.

All of this can be done to help America move into the future and support Americans as we move through this depression. It's an extraordinary moment, and it requires extraordinary leadership to help this country.

This list, by no means...
10/ is everything that we can do (just off the top of my head), but we desperately need bold leadership. Right now, as we ruminate on our daily lives, we should also think of what we can do to make our country better.
