I& #39;m tuned here @DukeSci_Soc
I& #39;m going to tweet a few things about science journalism and communication that& #39;s coming out of this
THREAD
At this point, there are very many credible scientific sources in an information climate that& #39;s swamped that& #39;s biased etc.
Science journalists are going to have a challenge making sure the good sciences isn& #39;t drowned
Some of the science that& #39;s coming out now will be wrong because we& #39;re going though ethical reviews fast... we& #39;re going to be aware of the post COVID-19 conversations
Scientists are going to be forced to choose the platforms through which they share that informational. Dr Fauci chose a sports star with a huge online following bigger than a reporter,so he talks to people who are influential who may not read journalists
Do people really know how many people are dying every minute? No, they need what they& #39;ll Keep them safe, prevention @MOH_Kenya @KTNNewsKE @K24Tv

Any communication that doesn& #39;t acknowledge how this will affect us isn& #39;t helpful
Hashtag #FlattenTheCurve has done sth the scientific community hadn& #39;t managed for vaccines etc & that& #39;s
i. Rallying social responsibility
ii. Draw attention to what& #39;s health system capacity in responding to pandemics (doesn& #39;t reduce incidence, spreads disease to manageable level)
HOW can early career scientist participate in communicating COVID-19

Scientists are likely to be trusted by those in their circles than politicians. So start from there

Risk communication 101: The messenger is important than the message.
Esp on messages on things that we don& #39;t want believe... That information is going to be augur well than people closer to the person than an outsider

So, choosing messenger is important
Scientists should be a fact checker for your circles. Blog, tweet, on WhatsApp
Scientists remained the most trusted people around as public trust declines.

That& #39;s a plus!

@AAS_AESA @AASciences @KEMRI_Kenya @KEMRI_Wellcome @aphrc release your professionals here because they& #39;re trusted
Let& #39;s not turn to self proclaimed experts! At this point journalists must distinguish EXPERTS and experts

Books about this have been proposed
*Triumph of doubt
*The death of expertise
Journalists must pronounce social capital

This virus is a "good thing"
It& #39;s teaching us about global collaboration in science, faults in our health systems, how people work and relate
