The problem with contrarianism or trutherism is that it's motivated by the desire to be free from the slavishness of groupthink, but it so easily becomes reflexively taking up the exact opposite position to the group — which makes it equally determined, manipulable, unfree.

Groupthink can be pretty slavish! But the kneejerk contrarian is even more convinced of his freedom than is the member of the hivemind, and so while being no more free, he is more deluded.
