Mateo Kovacic Career - A thread
Mateo started playing football at an Austrian club called LASK Linz. He also played for the Croatian national youth teams. He then joined the Dinamo Zagreb academy in 2007 and made his debut for the first team in 2010.

Kovacic has always been known for his dribbling ability.

Croatian U17 manager Martin Novoselac: ”I have never seen a player with so much talent, especially on the ball. It’s just an honour to work with Mateo.”

Mateo ended up playing 43 games for Dinamo Zagreb (12 Champions League games) and scored 7 goals. He won 2 league titles and 2 croatian cup titles. In 2011 Mateo won the ”Croatian Hope Of The Year” award.

He then moved to Inter Milan on January 31 2013 (Unknown fee). Mateo wore the number 10 jersey at Inter (Previously worn by Weislej Sneijder). He made his debut for Inter against AC Siena 4 days after his arrival.

Mateo ended up playing 80 games for Inter and scored 5 goals. On the 16th of August 2015 the Inter manager Roberto Mancini announced that they needed to sell Kovacic in order to stay in line of the FFP-rules.

He joined Real Madrid on the 18th of August 2015 for 38M euros. He played 73 games for Real Madrid but only scored 1 goal.

In August 2018 Kovacic was loaned out to Chelsea. It was a 1-year loan deal. Kovacic played 58 games for Chelsea on his loan spell and scored 0 goals and assisted 2 goals. He won the Europa League after a 4-1 win against Arsenal in the final.

Chelsea had an option to buy for 40M pounds and decided to activate it in July 2019. He signed a 5-year deal with the Blues. Kovacic has played 37 games for Chelsea this season and has scored 2 goals and assisted 3.

Kovacic has played 291 games in his professional career so far and only managed to score 15 goals. Why is that? Kovacic is not a player known for his scoring but under new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard it has been improved and it keeps improving.

Kovacic has been one of Chelsea’s best players this season after a very good season. He has shown that even though he doesn’t score that often he still performs at a very high level and is one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League.
