I think the beating of this drum by certain people in the theatre community without any deep criticality outside of “its better the normal way” is wasting a lot of the great time we can be thinking about evolving our medium.

Are we ignoring the impact of closet dramas? Radio plays? NT LIVE??

The execution and impact of a few online plays you saw fell short. The same could be said of To Kill a Mockingbird as a text for me but y’all ate that up.

Different strokes! Some online plays SLAP.
This epidemic gives us the opportunity sit with the reality that the a new generation is about to pay the costs that our forefathers have accrued from years of destroying our planet.

There will be more floods, more pandemics, more forces that drive us into our homes.
Let’s maybe spend this time figuring out how to use tools outside assembling to give us the things that being in a theatre can give us, instead of writing it off as a pat gesture to tide us over till we can get the real thing.

Bc for a generation this might be the real thing.
Also sidenote: while ephemerality is beautiful, etc...many of the arguments for its necessity in theatre feel related to rarifying the medium the way people do with precious metals to make them luxury items. Think about that the next time you worry about how filming it “dilutes”
