Nobuhiko Obayashi tribute thread:
Portrait of the artist as a young man.
The program for Obayashi& #39;s stage version of Grease (yes, really).

Tiananmen prevented Obayashi from shooting the finale of Beijing Watermelon on location in China, as intended; the finale was shot on a set. But to honor the young lives lost on June 4th 1989, he inserted 37 seconds of blank white leader into the film: 37 seconds = 6+4+1+9+8+9.
In 2002, Obayashi published a personal guide to the Seto Inland Sea, his beloved home region:
As a 5-6 year old child, Obayashi regularly went to the movies with the young Kaneto Shindo, who was, at the time, a boarder in the Obayashi household.
According to Obayashi, in ‘68, while shooting TV ads in Hollywood, he was asked to lend a hand to a group of young actors who had just shot a low-budget movie, which they were struggling to edit. It bears no Obayashi credit, but Easy Rider might contain an Obayashi splice or two.
Obayashi in a TV ad, or really more like a PSA, for JARO (Japan Advertising Review Organization). JARO promotes truth in advertising, and encourages Japanese consumers to call in and report misleading ads. Obayashi directed AKB48 music video, in which he cameos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ4jYWQh7tE">https://www.youtube.com/watch...

One of the melancholy pleasures of Obayashi& #39;s cinema is watching his young people grow up on screen.
If you’ll pardon a little self promotion, I’d like to reshare the podcast @fivepoisonskid and I did on Obayashi. It’s the one I’m most proud of: it helped cement our friendship, and I’d like to think that it brought Obayashi one or two new fans. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/snakes-funerals/id1164362481?mt=2&i=1000385281839">https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcas...

Kyoko & Nobuhiko Obayashi met 60+ years ago in Seijo, a Tokyo neighborhood home to many movie industry people. In addition to appearing in some early films (I believe that& #39;s her on the right, in Confession), Kyoko produced almost all of Obayashi& #39;s movies from the & #39;80s onwards...
...Kyoko was by all accounts an essential collaborator, though her contributions are not well understood in the West. Their partnership was the subject of a documentary that premiered last year at the Tokyo Film Festival, alongside Labyrinth of Cinema. https://2019.tiff-jp.net/en/lineup/film/32SPP08">https://2019.tiff-jp.net/en/lineup...
In the mid 80s, Obayashi worked on a few projects with the great Yukihiro Takahashi, the “third guy” from YMO. They made a music video and a feature, Poisson d’Avril, which stars Takahashi. The film is unavailable but you can listen to Takahashi’s album: https://youtu.be/Y8D6fAl6J_U ">https://youtu.be/Y8D6fAl6J...
