So, y'all have been privy to the decline and ultimate death of my grandfather last Sunday. But there's some other stuff I haven't talked about much, and my family is in a position of need. Again. Twitter has been a wonderful place for mutual aid in these covidious times, though.
My grandparents were poor, and lived on their social security checks and help from my uncle and, as often as I could, me.
It took a huge fight, but my uncle convinced my grandmother that she could no longer afford to rent the house they were in. My uncle used the social security checks to pay the rent for this month. They were going to use the initial deposit to get through May & move her in June.
Well, this glorious fucking government of ours retroactively took my grandfather's check. After all the bills got paid. Now everything is bouncing.
My uncle is a first responder, but he usually works extra side jobs because alimony and because life and because he's been helping these old people. But now that we're doing pandemic times, all those side jobs have dried up because they were all event security type things.
So more than half of my grandmother's shitty poverty line social security income is suddenly gone, the checks are bouncing, he's out of his extra work, I'm out of work—it's not good.
I sent him $250 I had in savings. I might be able to rustle some more up, but we need something like $1400 to fix this part of the mess.
This is frustrating to me because my grandparents made some really bad decisions over the years, and they left us with so many fires to put out. And it's just not easy, especially now, when we're all struggling.
So again, I'm throwing myself at the mercy of my people. If you have a single dollar or five or more, would you be willing to help us out? As if this whole thing wasn't hard enough, all the grieving we have to do separately.
I would really appreciate it. We would really appreciate it. Thank you. <3
