There are a lot of people I usually agree with politically with some very hot takes on the Leaving Cert decision.

I doubt that all these takes are helpful or cognisant of reality.

Slogans like “cancel it” or “replace with CBA” don’t help the Class of 2020.
I am a frequent critic of my employers (Dept of Ed) and the Govt but any decision they made here would have downsides.

They are trying to go ahead with the LC. This is recognised by most (not all) educationalists and teachers as the fairest way to try and proceed.
They are aiming to do it at the earliest suitable time from a public health POV. That leads to loads of issues which many people are highlighting but the alternatives to this plan have just as many downsides, if not more.
It is right to point out that this is added strain for lots of Leaving Certers but the wailing and gnashing of teeth on here is not productive for them either. To claim that no one cares about their mental health is ridiculous. All decisions have an impact on mental health.
I just saw one tweeter call a prominent educationalist a “horrible person” for supporting the decision and did she know what this would do to people’s mental health. Think about that tweet for a second.
That so many are under such strain should give us pause to think about the permanent status of the LC in the first place. Not to mention the inequality from a tech and home POV this crisis has shown us. But something needs to be done now, for this year’s students.
There remain loads of issues with this decision - the practicals and teachers availability/contracts being obvious ones - but they can be ironed out.
I’d be happy to listen to teachers, students, parents and others with a background about other viable alternatives of course. But none I’ve read to date make as much sense as this difficult decision.
