Yet another reason American media should report the facts, regardless of what any government policy says. Fact: Taiwan 🇹🇼 is an independent, sovereign country. And has been for 70 years. Fact: Its official name is Republic of China, Taiwan, 23 million people carry its passport. https://twitter.com/heguisen/status/1248605807173709825
Fact: Taiwan is a liberal democracy. Fact: Taiwan has never been part of the People’s Republic of China 🇨🇳. Fact: The United States 🇺🇸 had an embassy in Taipei for 30 years (1949-1979). Since then we have AIT, which is embassy in every single way, except title.
Fact: US State department, as a matter of policy, chooses to deny the fact of Taiwan’s legitimacy as a nation. Fact: many US officials believe that formal recognition of Taiwan 🇹🇼 would lead to a Chinese (PRC) attack and war. Fact: US policy based on fear, not strategic vision.
Opinion: it is not in the American interest to base policy on a lie. The US State department should carefully move toward normalizing diplomatic relations with Taiwan 🇹🇼. Fact: @Stokes2049 has written extensively on how this could be achieved.
