I usually keep my mouth shut about this kind of stuff but I'm angry. This morning I learned that the editors (including myself) at Daily Camera/Times-Call and PMP publications will all be taking a pay cut for the foreseeable future.
This is added to furloughs in the newsroom, a reduction in hours for the photo staff and an elimination of columnists. While I am angry about the loss of income, I am most worried about the loss of a valuable source of information to our community.
Plain and simple. Less hours for reporters and photographers means fewer stories and fewer photos in an already shrinking print product.
I am absolutely appalled that we are being forced to make cuts to people who are risking their lives to be out in public to tell the stories of our community during this pandemic.
The work the photographers and reporters do is really important. In a time that we have seen increases in traffic to our websites one thing is clear: people are looking for a source of good, reliable information during this unprecedented time.
Without sports and a drop in advertising, there are losses to profit. I get that. I understand the financial implications of this but I also understand greed.
Reliable information is so important for all of us to get through this. I'm not going to tell you to give up your subscriptions in protest. I'm not going to tell you to get your news from somewhere else.
I am going to tell you to donate to organizations and funds that support journalists and the pursuit of truth. As soon as I verify a few of them (after all I am a journalist) I will tweet out links. Please support the people that are dedicated to telling the truth.
Here is one i trust. This an org I have been a part of for years. "All donations are made through the National Press Photographers Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law."

Will I start my own gofundme o patreon as the kids do these days? Maybe. For now I am going to apply for unemployment and then go back to doing what every journalist does: seek the truth to enlighten the human condition. /rantover
