This tweet shows the common misconception about Estheticians. Dermatologist and Estheticians work hand in hand. Esthetician’s help create a skincare plan for you incorporating prescriptions the dermatologist gives you. https://twitter.com/notsurvivingmd/status/1247768039736479744
Additionally, not everyone needs prescription drugs for their skin concerns. Some people just need a solid routine. Both individuals have extensive knowledge and are both equally responsible for healthy skin.
Estheticians are not the same as Dermatologists and shouldn’t claim to be or try to “replace” them.
Often times Dermatologists will recommend products like Cerave and Cetaphil to their patients because these products have less ingredients that could be potential irritants or react with whatever prescriptions they have you on.
And while there are many expensive products on the market, a quality Esthetician will recommend a product that has a better delivery system. Which is often why these products are more expensive because they have a higher percentage/amount of active ingredients.
Actives meaning ingredients that create a change in your skin. Ingredients that target your specific concerns like dullness, dryness, acne, sensitivity, etc. Not a product that’s just going to remove dirt and makeup and not put anything good into your skin!
And if you have any skin disorder Dermatologists are wonderful for prescribing and giving you proper knowledge on how to care for you skin, while an Esthetician can formulate a safe routine based around the Dermatologist’s recommendations.
Obviously Dermatologists do so much more than that! I am not a Dermatologist and do not claim to be one. However I am a Licensed Esthetician and know that these two professions should both be respected and should not be pitted against each other when they are both here to help!!
Anyways I’m just passionate about skincare and I’m not here for the “Esthetician vs Dermatologist- Who’s right, who’s wrong?” Bullshit. And if you are being condescending as a Skincare Professional you need to rethink your career because that is NOT what this is about.
People are coming to you usually insecure about their skin and for you to be condescending, rude or abuse your power to trick them into buying something they don’t need- you’re not a professional and are not doing your job- which is to HELP PEOPLE
Ok last thing. I know I’m not the most knowledgeable Esthetician but I’m constantly learning and educating myself. No Esthetician knows everything! And they should never claim to know everything because new studies are constantly coming out and things are constantly changing.
