This person’s comments are a prime example of pretension and privilege in action. It’s not pretentious to have a favourite opera but it is to assume anyone who doesn’t wasn’t well brought up. https://twitter.com/http_lovecraft/status/1248248945756663809
This attitude is something I’ve seen a lot of in some areas of the writing community, especially in the left-leaning section. The lack of understanding that not everyone has the same learning opportunities to develop a love of opera or Latin.
Or expecting everyone to understand social issues just because it’s on the Internet. People forget that rural communities are often underserved in both education and information infrastructure.
And yes, this affects populations regardless of ethnicity. Some might have greater access due to privilege but it pales in comparison to the access urban communities, such as for example Toronto, have.
Also, there’s a large portion of gatekeeping involved. People who define themselves as high class are often unwelcoming of outsiders and go out of their way, subconsciously at least, of making them feel lesser.
In the end, judging someone who didn’t have the same opportunities as you for enrichment is a petty and shallow perspective. Helping others understand why you love something, helping them broaden their horizons...
...That makes you a better person. This is especially important for those of us that society grants a greater amount of privilege.
