If you lost your job, have no salary, and are panicking about healthcare costs, I would like to offer some advice from someone who has been down this road. Contact your preferred hospital system and ask for a financial assistance application along with the instructions.

Please note: these applications typically expire after about 90 days, so SAVE COPIES of everything you submit so that it’s easier when you have to re-submit. Also, ask your hospital about resubmitting after the original application expires.

If you have no salary, you will be cleared for 100% assistance. Again, keep in mind that this clearance is temporary and that you will have to resubmit the application as per your hospital’s instructions. If it’s a 911, you can do the paperwork after the fact.

There’s no shame in asking for help. Hospitals don’t have to pay taxes thanks to charity care. You will need clearance to make medical appointments, although you should not make elective appointments right now for obvious reasons. For some, having the clearance = of mind.
