Having talent is nice but supporting the talent is nicer & a lot of Nigerian celebrities/companies don’t support creative people or work. I’m gonna talk since everyone is acting like they don’t know what’s going on
When some celebrities & companies discover you have talent, they want to keep you to themselves so no one finds and takes you. Which means they avoid publicly supporting(reposting, tagging, etc) your work as much as possible
some people would even come up with the grand idea of stealing and replicating your work just to avoid supporting you. I have proof of this.
A lotttttt of young designers make album covers for your favourite celebrities and don’t get paid after an agreement had been made. I can easily call out names, they should come and deny it.
And when you start to disturb them for your money:
I mean obvs most of them think they can get away with it because nobody knows ‘adamu the designer’
I can go on an on about how some deceive you with “do you have a passport?” Instead of paying you your coins
And here’s the crazy part. Supporting doesn’t even remove one naira from your pocket. But selfishness has been embedded so deep in Nigerians lungs they can’t think outside of their stupid fame box
Creative people are also scared to speak up because they might not be backed up, and they don’t want to lose a relationship with their favourite ‘mentor/celebrity’ who treats them like trash.
a lot of ‘creatives’ tell me they don’t charge well ‘cos they do their work easily so it doesn’t feel like work. But i mean, if you couldn’t do the work easily then it wouldn’t be a talent. You think musicians that get paid millions for shows don’t make music easily? think
If you think about it, most creative people who have happened to get some type of ‘major exposure ’ were promoted by people outside Nigeria who just liked their work. That makes me question everything
Tbf the only company in the Nigerian entertainment industry that actually matches up to paying creative people their worth is Empawa Africa (and I promise this isn’t because I work there)
Being a creative person in naij is harder than most of you think and I really hope everyone wakes up, signs better deals and get their bags sha, we all need to be smarter and take ourselves seriously
