My top 5 tips for online engagement.

1. Do you have to?
Lots of people are rushing to get things online. But you need to consider if it will really work or if you are just shoehorning something in to Zoom.
2. Setup
Laptop cams and mics are limited in quality. If you can plug in a DLSR cam, video camera or even your phone (via Epochcam) to use as a webcam and try and source an external mic.
Have cam around eye level and at least a metre away. Try standing if you can.
3. Break the wall
Right at the start set out the rules of engagement, when and how to speak. Then get as many people to interact as possible. If you don’t do this within 10 minutes people will go into passive listening mode and it will be difficult to get them to interact later
4. Keep it short
People are used to watching very short videos on their computers and phones. The optimum length of a YouTube video is 4min 20s. For twitter its just 90s. After 20 min of listening most of your audience will have switched off. Keep it short or see step 5
5. Mix it up
Every 10 min in my online sessions something different happens. Breakout discussions/kahoot quiz/ a video/ a task/ different speaker. Even just a 5 min break away from comp. To keep attention and momentum use as many modes of engagement as possible
