We've to save this society from fake news and hate that is badly hurting citizens, affecting social fabric. Not just for us but also for our future generations. There are ways to do it and we must take certain steps now, urgently to stop it, tackle this menace. Let's start here..

The most basic step is to form a Peace Committee or Sadbhav Manch or any such group, even existing one in your city or town, formal or informal. Ensure that if there is an inflammatory post, fake news or statement, make a complaint to the local police station.

Wait for a couple of days, if there is action, fine, if not, you can go to superior officers, inform them. You can approach middle-level officers, district chiefs, even FAX or email or other ways, complain to state police chief about how such a thing can cause law-and-order issue

Remember one thing, in India, paper trail is important. Anything on paper works, somewhere it goes, even if in PHQ's complaint cell or DGP's office or if reaches Home Minister or CM. It may lead to inquiry or action or at least officers pulled up from the state capital.

Sometime there is prompt action, sometime there is delay but believe me if you are active and do it relentlessly, there is definitely action. Work to ensure law-and-order and harmony in society. Anyone who spreads hate must not be allowed to go scot-free.

Always engage with officials, you can tweet too to the handles. And, then there are other ways, legal action can always be taken. You have the option to even file FIR through court, with proofs of any wrongdoing. But take prominent citizens along, keep record, lodge plaint.

This is not tough but has to be done diligently, systematically. Keep an eye, don't ignore anyone who spreads inflammatory message because it damages harmony and affects threshold. If you don't act, then 10 more people will start it and it is seen as 'normal' in the area then.

It is every citizen's duty to ensure that there is harmony, law-and-order in your city. Anyone who tries to break it, must be dealt with lawfully. Never think that 'nothing will happen'. Administration can't watch all, you've to take lead & do most basic thing--approach, complain

In some small towns, people do it and have created a safe society locally. But if you ignore and are cynical, feel 'nothing will happen', 'nothing happens', then it is going to worsen the situation so much in years to come that you may perhaps not even turn the clock back then.

Life is not just about attending seminars, watching movies, taking out kids or going to malls as many people in big cities too and think 'nothing can be done' or 'what we can do'. It is about some struggle too, very basic duties and efforts.

Right now, one can't venture out. But if there is something that has potential to disrupt harmony, inform officials in your town, state by phone or through SMS or Apps that are made by police in several cities. Or tag on Twitter. Also, time to learn how to do it all.
