Because of the way this has progressed, the South hasn't really gotten the worst of it yet (except LA and GA), but the southern GOP Governors are trying really hard to make this as bad as possible. https://twitter.com/hemantmehta/status/1248617844285161473
Makes me nervous to see the increase in cases in AL, MI (which is nearby the biggest hotspot in LA), and TN. They probably already have a significant number of cases that haven't been confirmed yet; but they're increasing in the JHU map.
Currently, there are only 2,260 confirmed cases in MI (according to JHU), but most metrics over the years put MI dead last or close to it in terms of many health care quality and public health metrics. What happens if that number hits 5% of MI's population? 10%?
Is Gov Reeves actually prepared if 0.1% of MI (29,000 people) needs a ventilator? We've seen how bad the death toll has been in LA; and LA has a better health care system than MI does.
In MI, churches are probably the most likely source of transmission, as they are regular, large communal gatherings where familiar folks want to chat, hug, etc. Those kinds of spaces make me (and people who are actual experts on infectious disease) very nervous.
As has been pointed out, I mean MS. Not MI. It's clearly too early for this and I need coffee.
