THREAD/ Coronavirus is disproportionately killing African Americans.
No, the virus isn't racist. But, the way it's affecting the black community is anything but equal.
And if our leaders aren't going to protect us... We have to save ourselves #ItsUpToUs 1/6
African Americans have less access to healthcare, are more likely to live in areas with high pollution, and bear more stress leading to many of the underlying conditions COVID-19 preys upon. We're also more likely to work service jobs and can’t stay home. 2/6
I’ve noticed something typical of American media as outlets cover this story.
The face of the pandemic has been white. Despite data showing otherwise.
That may have helped perpetuate early rumors that the virus didn’t affect black people. Because we didn’t see any. 3/6
And it’s easy to dismiss this if you can’t see it. So I spent my morning looking for black victims to put faces to the statistics. Their stories will be included in this thread.
And you can add yours too of either victims or survivors. #ItsUpToUs 4/6
If you can stay in, do it. And if you know someone with underlying conditions, offer to get their groceries so they can stay in. If you know how to make masks, do that and give them out. And push your politicians to do something. It’s literally their job. #ItsUpToUs 5/6
If there are no testing sites in your area, sound the alarm. If you’re turned away from a hospital when you need care, post about it.
If your job isn’t protecting you, report it to your local paper or tv station (even if you do it anonymously).
Make noise. #ItsUpToUs 6/6
